Mr Steven Massey discusses the option of physiotherapist treatment “Physiotherapy may help, but you may you have to wait a long time to see a physiotherapist due to lengthy waiting lists. This is one reason why you may choose to see a chiropractor privately; while you are waiting for your physio appointment, your condition may get worse. The physiotherapist’s education focuses on helping people recover from illnesses such as stroke, heart attack, lung disease, and neurological disease. Only a small section of the physiotherapist’s training is focused on pain relief and rehab, of musculoskeletal conditions. Most chiropractor degrees are four years full time and they focus on back pain, neck pain, joint pain and headaches. Because they spend longer at university and their focus is narrower, chiropractors often say that they have a more specialised knowledge of musculoskeletal conditions, back pain and neck pain, than physiotherapists. Chiropractors think of themselves as specialists similar to medical consultants. Some physiotherapists study for an extra year, focussing on musculoskeletal conditions and back pain. Like chiropractors, they learn to manipulate, bringing relief to back pain and neck pain. These specialist physiotherapists can be compared to chiropractors. You should be careful of any therapist who says they manipulate without having completed a proper university degree. You could sustain injury from manipulation by someone who is not a fully qualified spinal care physiotherapist, or a registered osteopath/chiropractor. You may like to consider having physiotherapy as well as treatment from a chiropractor, and you will benefit from this according to the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy. |

| Chiropractic is the art and science practiced by chiropractors. In many ways chiropractic is similar to physiotherapy and osteopathy as practiced by physiotherapists and osteopaths. Although there is much debate about the difference between Chiropractors and Osteopaths, in reality their approaches have much in common. Physiotherapists who manipulate are also similar to Chiropractors and Osteopaths. | ||
